Nature Takes Its Course

The first day that Stanley disturbed the bunny nest, I had seen the mother bunny bolting away a few hours later. I figured I had just scared her off.

The following day, I got a call back from a Wildlife Rehabilitator, who told me not to disturb the nest, as I’d figured. I said I hadn’t seen the mother bunny but I had seen movement in the top layer of leaves, so she said the mother bunny might just be hiding for now. She said the babies would vacate the nest after a short time, since they already had their eyes open and weren’t pink.

Bunnies Part Two

Chris came home and immediately dug a grave. I said, “How do you know it’s dead?”

Chris said grimly, “It’s dead enough.”

Bunnies Are Awfully Hairy

In the last year or so, we’ve had an influx of rabbits. And by influx, I mean “more than zero” which is what I would prefer. I don’t mind seeing the rabbits in winter because I think of them as coyote bait, helpfully luring said coyotes away from the lovely and plump Paco who would probably taste divine even without any seasoning. But now that the weather has gotten hot, I wish the rabbits would all just die.

Earlier this year I found two rabbits sitting together on the patch of land over the septic system, calmly eating the moss/clover that passes for grass in our yard. Now, though, I’m finding rabbits in the actual dog area, which I know only because in the two seconds after I let the dogs outside, they begin barking wildly and chasing the rabbit, which does this weird bouncing-off-the-chicken-wire dance before it finally makes it to safety under a piece of fencing.

I wasn’t sure why the rabbits were in the dog area because there really isn’t much clover, dirt, weeds, or anything that appears remotely interesting to a rabbit. Today, though, I found the attraction: the rabbits are showing up in the dog area because they have what appears to be a nest next to the poop bin.

Media

I have still not figured out how to edit digital video (give me good old 16mm), so the latest Tiny Dog Adventure will have to wait.

In the meantime, I’m watching Alanis Morrissette covering The Black-Eyed Peas’ “My Humps” and Will Ferrell’s The Landlord (waaaay too many times; I just love Pearl), and listening to Jonathan Coulton’s cover of Alanis’s “You Oughta Know.”

The Serpent Gift

by Lene Kaaberbol

ONE LINE SUMMARY: Dina, the Shamer’s daughter who has recently lost her own Shamer gift, meets her father and discovers that she may also have a serpent gift.

This is the third book in the Shamer Chronicles. While the first two books of the series were good, they weren’t stupendous, and it wasn’t until this one that I thought, “Yes, this is awesome.” In the previous books, I was annoyed with the way the book shifted viewpoints from Dina and her brother, Davin, but I didn’t mind it in this book and I also felt the book was perfect in the way it progressed and ended.

The last book in the series, The Shamer’s War, is also very good. I didn’t like the way the war concluded, but all the other plot points came together nicely. I’m always a little hesitant to recommend books in a series, because I like to read everything in order, but that can be tough when slogging through earlier books that may not be as good as later ones (see: Tamora Pierce). That being said, the first two in the series are interesting and the last two are terrific.

The Shamer’s gift, by the way, is the ability to look at someone and make them feel ashamed of their own behavior. The serpent gift is…well, I’m not entirely clear on that. I thought I knew what it was, but book four describes a different serpent gift.

The author wrote these books in her native Danish and then translated them herself into English. My only regret is that her other books have not yet been translated.

Maybe I Should Be on the Geico Caveman Show

Does anyone know anything about what kind of software to use to edit mpeg videos on a PC? I want to edit some videos and convert them to Quicktime, and post them here. I have spent an hour looking this shit up on Cnet and Google, and still cannot find software or simple directions that seems to do all that. Maybe I’m supposed to buy a Mac…BUT I CAN’T AFFORD ONE!!!!

I used to be technologically advanced. Now everyone has a TiVo, knows how to post YouTube videos, and update MySpace pages. I don’t even have an iPod, and even scarier, I don’t even have an interest in getting an iPod because I hardly ever listen to music anymore.

Help!

How We Get Our Exercise Around Here

Lately the only way we have been able to stop Stanley (or “Stan Lee” as Chris prefers) from scraping and whining at bedtime is to put his collar on, attach a leash, and walk him briskly around our house.

The weather here has been too cold and rainy to walk the dogs outside, and the way our house is structured (tiny spaces separated by stairs and more stairs) means that we don’t have a large enough area to play with the dogs inside. So a walk around our house means circling through the alley known as the kitchen, into the dining room, around the paper tray for the dogs’ business, between the dining room table and hutch where Mina prefers to do her business, around the broken coffee table and the ramp for Mina resting on the couch, and over computer cords on the other side of the dining room table. No, we do not live in a crack house; why do you ask?

Green

Dear President Bush,
Don’t you feel even the slightest bit embarrassed that Home Depot and Wal-mart — Wal-mart! — are doing more for the environment than you are?

Sincerely,
Not a Fan

Chase Bank Part 3. Or maybe 4. The conclusion, nevertheless.

I don’t have time to link to all the other posts, but you can do a search for “Chase” in the box to the right.

I had made a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, among other places, about the problems we were having with Chase. Apparently the only way to get results is to contact them, because my complaint was forwarded automatically to the local BBB office in charge of Delaware, where the main offices of Chase Bank are located. The very next business day after I made the complaint, I received a call from someone at the CEO offices at Chase Bank to let me know they were looking into my complaint.

About a week later, another person called from the Chase CEO offices and talked to Chris. She said she could not talk to me since I was not the primary cardholder, although I had been the one to make the complaint (and change our email address, and argue about our bill, and get reported to the credit bureaus along with Chris…). She verified the information I had put in my complaint: namely, that we did not receive any bill notifications online, did not receive a letter in the mail, and that we had paid up once we discovered the outstanding bills.

She told Chris that she would credit us for the late fees and finance fees, and remove the negative information about us at the credit bureaus.

I said, “What about the Amazon points?”
